The Seller's Dilemma - Should I Stay or Should I Go?
"We don't know where we're going" may be an all too common concern but, it's especially true for mature homeowners who are thinking of selling the family home. A decision of this magnitude can be nerve wracking. There isn't the luxury of time or the energy and resources to fix a mistake. Camping out on the proverbial park bench is never on anyone's wish list and this is why it becomes so important to have all the details worked out beforehand.
The decision to move can require considerable thought and time to initiate. A past instructors relays to her students how three years from her initial conversation with homeowners, they finally called her back with the pronouncement, "We're ready." With experience, I came to see this as the norm rather than the exception.
It's no secret that, as we age, we'd prefer to stay in our homes and continue to live our current lifestyle. It can be a process to come to terms with the fact that the house is too large, and the upkeep of the property has become way more than we can comfortably handle, or that there are safety issues.
Homeowners have to fully come to terms with the decision to move or passive-aggressive stalling can pop up repeatedly throughout the transaction. This is especially true if the decision is being forced upon them by well-meaning family members or friends.
Sellers: When the problem appears to be, "We don't know where we're going," the only option that makes sense is to take all the time you need to figure it out.
